9.                  Freedom fighter Bhagat Singh's 87th death anniversary (hanged at the age of 23 in Lahore on 23 March, 1931 along with Rajguru and Sukhdev) was observed in Lahore by two groups of people, The Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation (BSMF) and the Bhagat Singh Foundation Pakistan (BSFP) who demanded that he be declared a "national hero" of Pakistan.

10.              Singh was hanged at the age of 23 in Lahore on 23 March, 1931 along with Rajguru and Sukhdev. The capital punishment had inspired thousands of people to take up the cause of the freedom movement.

11.              The Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation (BSMF) and the Bhagat Singh Foundation Pakistan (BSFP) on Friday held separate functions at Shadman Chowk where they were hanged.

12.              The participants paid rich tribute to the three freedom fighters. Some relatives of Singh made a telephonic address.

Bhagat Singh, the Original ‘Angry Young Man’ Who Bombed Parliament:

13.              “Have you ever felt like uttering those famous words “Inquilab Zindabad” and marching out of a boring class or from a dreary day at work?

14.              Today might be the most opportune because, this day in history, 8 April 1929, is when Bhagat Singh marched into the Parliament with Batukeshwar Dutt, bombed the assembly in session and yelled the infamous words, in hopes of earning the freedom that India would get, 18 years later”.

15.              BSMF Chairman Imtiaz Rashid presented a resolution demanding the British Queen to tender an apology for the hanging of the three freedom fighters and compensate their families.

16.              He also demanded naming a road after his name and including a chapter in the school curriculum besides issuing a postal ticket and installation of Singh's statue at Shadman Chowk.

17.               BSFP Founder President Abdullah Malik said: Bhagat Singh raised his voice against imperialism. He will be remembered as a great freedom fighter. He demanded that the governments of India and Pakistan declare Singh and his comrades as "national heroes".

18.               The events were held under strict security in the face of threats from extremists.

19.              Both the foundations have been demanding renaming the Shadman Chowk as 'Bhagat Singh Chowk'. However, the Hurmat-e-Rasool, a sister organisation of Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed-led Jamaat-u-Dawah, opposes the proposal and suggests to rename it as 'Hurmat Chowk.' The Quint

20.               “While marking the occasion of revolutionary Bhagat Singh’s 87th death anniversary on Friday, two Pakistani groups demanded that he be declared a national hero of their country. The two organisations in question were Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation (BSMF) and Bhagat Singh Foundation Pakistan (BSFP).

21.               The groups had also conducted two separate events at Lahore’s Shadman Chowk, where Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged on 23rd March 1931. The events involved the participants paying tributes to the trio which included the revolutionaries’ relatives expressing their thoughts via phone.

22.               The events incidentally were held under tight security owing to the possible threat from extremists.

23.               BSFP’s founder Abdullah Malik was quoted as saying that, Bhagat Singh raised his voice against imperialism and that he would be remembered as a great freedom fighter. He later demanded that India and Pakistan declare Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev as “national heroes”.

24.               The other demands of the groups included:

(i)                 BSMF’s chairman Imtiaz Rashid passing a resolution asking Britain’s Queen to tender an apology for hanging the trio and paying compensation to their families.

(ii)               Naming a road after Bhagat Singh and including a chapter on him in Pakistan’s schools.

(iii)             Installing Bhagat Singh’s statue at Shadman Chowk and issuing a postal ticket in his name.

25.               Both BSMF and BSFP have demanded that Shadman Chowk be renamed as Bhagat Singh Chowk, but radical Islamist organisation Hurmat-e-Rasool has opposed it and instead demanded that it be renamed “Hurmat Chowk”.

26.               Such efforts to try and properly recognise Bhagat Singh have been made time and again in Pakistan. In January it was reported that the Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation had demanded that he be conferred Pakistan’s highest gallantry award “Nishan-e-Haider”. The application regarding the same was made to the country’s Punjab province government.

27.               Back in September 2017 a Pakistani lawyer Advocate Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi had filed a petition in Lahore High Court for proving the innocence of Bhagat Singh”. By OpIndia Staff Posted on March 25, 2018
